Introduction
The relevance of the topic is determined by the increasing interest of schoolchildren and adults in various types of collecting. At the moment, it remains relevant for historians, psychologists and sociologists. Collecting and collecting has become a widespread hobby today for categories of the population of all ages, and especially among the schoolchildren.
The hypothesis of this study is that collecting is not only an exciting, but also an educational activity.
The purpose of the work is to learn in detail about the collections of generations and tell about your own collection.
Research objectives:
- Define the concept of «collection», analyze my father’s collection
- Analyze your own collection
The object of the study is collecting among the school community as a phenomenon of our time.

1.The theoretical part.
- What is collecting?
In the «Great Soviet Encyclopedia» collecting is considered as a purposeful collection of homogeneous objects of scientific, historical or artistic value. [1]
The Explanatory Dictionary defines collecting as «the systematic collection of homogeneous objects of scientific, artistic, literary, etc. interest.» [2] Its roots go back to the distant past. So, during the excavations of the ancient Slavic city of Berestye, archaeologists discovered a collection of shells of tropical seas. How did they get to our northern latitudes? Apparently, their owner was not indifferent to collecting. If you believe the words of cosmonaut V.V. Gorbatko, «according to such an indicator as the number of collectors per capita, in some countries they even judge the general culture of the nation.» [5]
Collecting is usually carried away by all children, not only the gifted. Collecting is a long-term occupation. It rightfully refers to one of the options for independent human activity. [6]
Academician I. P. Pavlov himself, being a philatelist, spoke positively about collecting, said that it teaches a person to accuracy, perseverance, painstaking work with the material — in a word, educates the qualities necessary for independent activity in any field of science and production. [3]
- Types of collecting.
The most common types of collecting have their own names:
- numismatics is collecting and studying coins,
- bonistics — collecting paper banknotes as a source of information about the economic and political history of states,
- faleristics — collecting all kinds of badges and badges,
- xerophilia is collecting any labels, not just wrappers.
A considerable percentage of collectors are also philatelists — collectors of postage stamps. Those guys whose family travels a lot can collect a collection of all kinds of tourist stickers: hotel, car. This type of collecting is called a cofrocard. [2]
2.The practical part.
Philately is not a simple hobby, as many may think. After all, this hobby carries a huge cognitive potential, stimulating curiosity, interest in the history of their native country among young people and the younger generation. In addition, a postage stamp is not just a piece of paper. It is also a real work of art, albeit small in size. [7]Postage stamps are a kind of «business cards» of the state, over the creation of which more than a dozen talented artists worked. Philately is not a cheap pleasure. A vivid proof of this is the most expensive brands of the USSR, the prices of which are sometimes comparable to the price of a one-room apartment or a brand-new car! Therefore, not everyone can afford to purchase individual copies of postage stamps. [5]
Philatelists collect not only new stamps. Many collectors believe that the true value of a stamp lies in fulfilling its mission, i.e. they collect extinguished stamps. The impression of postmarks carries additional information. [3]
My dad collected stamps when he was a schoolboy. In those days, all the boys were fond of stamps. And they proudly called themselves «Philatelists». They searched for postage stamps at the post offices, they exchanged them, and the boys were also brought by their relatives from different cities. The desired stamp could be obtained if you corresponded with a peer from another republic or even a country. The stamps were carefully stored in special albums. My father has a wonderful collection of stamps, consisting of several themes.
- The theme of space
- Topic famous writers and poets
- Theme famous paintings by famous artists
- The theme of achievement in the world.
As you know, there was no Internet at that time,
Dad said that with the help of stamps you can find out the events that took place in society and the state at different times. We have reviewed images of 20 brands of different themes. Each of the stamps has a year of manufacture. On some stamps there is a short name of the event to which it is dedicated. It did not cause us much difficulty to calculate the date of the event.
Today, children prefer to collect flyers, badges, key rings, mugs, shells, etc. I can also call myself a collector. I have a wonderful collection of magnets. Looking at them, you can find out which cities and countries I have visited. Or I want to visit in the future. For example: a few magnets of hot Turkey remind me of a wonderful vacation last year. And magnets depicting the sights of Moscow can mentally take me back to a three-day trip in Moscow. I am happy to exchange magnets with relatives and friends, and I always bring them as a souvenir. In the future, I dream of visiting Germany. And I have already collected beautiful magnets depicting wonderful places that I will definitely see.
After conducting research, I saw that my hypothesis that collecting is not only fascinating, but also an educational activity was confirmed
At the end of my work, I want to note that:
- Collecting gives you some adrenaline, you should always be on the alert.
- The process of collecting creates peace of mind, especially when you look at them
